Chaplin este un „personaj” pe care îl iubesc. Doar să-mi menţionezi numele lui şi îmi voi schimba toată mimica, voi afişa un zâmbet cât oraşul în care mă aflu, oricât de mic sau de mare, cel mai probabil mă vei binedispune pentru ceva timp.

Am câtiva eroi pe care-i număr pe degete, iar Chaplin este la prima mână întotdeauna. Eroii mei sunt oamenii care s-au dedicat unei arte / profesii şi nu doar că au schimbat total datele problemei în domeniu, dar sunt sigur că şi lumea.

Cum ar fi fost să n-avem, din punctul meu de vedere, poate (şi spun poate pentru că am alergie la cuvinte pompoase) cel mai bun monolog din istoria filmului, monologul din The Great Dictator (1940).

Îmi cer scuze, dar eu nu vreau să fiu un împărat. Asta nu e treaba mea. Nu vreau să conduc sau să cuceresc pe nimeni. Aş vrea să-i pot ajuta pe toţi însă, dacă-i posibil; evrei, arieni, negri, albi. Toţi vrem să ne ajutăm unul pe celălalt. Fiinţele umane sunt aşa. Vrem să trăim prin fericirea celorlalţi, nu prin suferinţa lor. Noi nu vrem să ne urâm şi să ne dispreţuim unul pe celălalt. În această lume este loc pentru toţi. Şi bunul pământ este bogat şi poate avea grijă de toţi. Viaţa poate fi liberă şi frumoasă, dar noi am pierdut calea. Lăcomia a otrăvit sufletele oamenilor; a blocat lumea prin ură; ne-a dus cu paşi mărunţi spre suferinţă şi vărsare de sânge. Am dezvoltat viteza, dar ne-am închis pe noi înşine înăutru. Măşinăriile care ne aduc prosperitate ne-au lăsat neputincioşi. Cunoaşterea ne-a făcut să devenim mai cinici; inteligenţa noastră insensibili şi răi. Gândim prea mult şi simţim prea puţin. În loc de maşinării avem nevoie de umanitate. În loc de inteligenţă, avem nevoie de bunătate şi tandreţe. Fără aceste calităţi, viaţa va deveni violentă şi totul va fi pierdut. Avionul şi radioul ne-au adus mai aproape. Însăşi natura acestor lucruri strigă după bunătatea din om; strigă după fraternitate universală; pentru unitatea tuturor. Chiar şi acum vocea mea ajunge la milioane de oameni în lume, milioane de bărbaţi, femei şi copii disperaţi, victime ale unui sistem care îl face pe om să tortureze şi să încarcereze oameni nevinovaţi. Pentru acei oameni care mă pot auzi, eu le spun: „Nu disperaţi”. Nenorocirea care s-a abătut asupra noastră este consecinţa lăcomiei, amărăciunea oamenilor cărora le este frică de progresul uman. Ura oamenilor va trece, dictatorii vor muri, iar puterea pe care ei au luat-o de la oameni se va întoarce la oameni. Şi atâta timp cât oameni se vor sacrifica, libertatea nu va pieri niciodată.

Soldaţi! Nu vă lăsaţi pe mâna acestor brute care vă dispreţuiesc, care vă transformă în sclavi; care vă înregimentează vieţile, vă spun ce să faceţi, ce să gândiţi şi ce să simţiţi! Care vă instruiesc, vă dau porţiile cu raţia, vă tratează ca pe nişte vite şi vă folosesc drept carne de tun! Nu vă lăsaţi pe mâna acestor oameni inumani – oameni maşini cu minţi maşini şi inimi maşini. Voi nu sunteţi maşini! Voi sunteţi oameni! Cu iubire de oameni în inimile voastre! Nu urâţi! Numai cei neiubiţi urăsc; cei neiubiţi şi cei inumani. Soldaţi! Nu luptaţi pentru slavie! Luptaţi pentru libertate! În capitolul al şaptesprezecelea al Evangheliei după Luca, stă scris că împărăţia lui Dumnezeu este în om, nu într-un singur om sau într-un grup de oameni, ci în toţi oamenii! În voi! Voi, oamenii, aveţi puterea, puterea de a crea maşini, putearea de a crea fericire! Voi, oamenii, aveţi puterea de a face viaţa liberă şi frumoasă, de a face viaţa o aventură minunată. În numele democraţiei, haideţi să folosim acea putere. Haideţi să ne unim. Haideţi să luptăm pentru o lume nouă, o lume decentă care va da oamenilor şansa să muncească, care va da tinerilor un viitor şi bătrânilor siguranţă. Cu promisiunea acestor lucruri, brutele au venit la putere. Dar ei mint! Ei nu îşi îndeplinesc promisiunile. Ei nu le vor îndeplini niciodată! Dictatorii se eliberează pe ei înşişi, dar înrobesc oamenii! Acum haideţi să luptăm pentru a elibera lumea! Să dărâmăm barierele naţionale! Să alungăm lăcomia, ura şi intoleranţa! Haideţi să luptăm pentru o lume a raţiunii, o lume în care ştiinţa şi progresul vor conduce către fericirea tuturor. Soldaţi, în numele democraţiei, să ne unim!

I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black men, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others’ happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls; has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge as made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these things cries out for the goodness in man; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say “Do not despair.” The misery that has come upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to these brutes who despise you, enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle and use you as cannon fodder! Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men—machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are men! With the love of humanity in your hearts! Don’t hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to the happiness of us all. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite!
